Abstract

This paper makes a critical analysis of how themes that mirror magic realism are presented in Utendi wa Mikidadi na Mayasa. The paper specifically focuses on tenets of magic realism that revolve around a character called Mikidadi. This epic poem was purposively sampled because it reflects the pillars of Magic Realism theory, that was founded by Franz Roh, in a remarkable way. Mikidadi is beyond the borders of an ordinary human being. He is engaged in many battles in which he vanquishes all his opponents save only in one battle with Ali (the Lion of God). This is indeed an affirmation of magic realism. It is expected that this paper will be useful to scholars of Kiswahili classical poetry and magical realism.
